The Wine Spirit and Education Trust (WSET) is a globally recognized wine training program that will allow participants to gain insight into the world of wine and spirits. DJ Kearney is a Vancouver-based wine educator, wine writer, judge, presenter and classically trained chef. A diverse background in wine, food and geology makes her uniquely qualified to guide the discovery of the world’s wine regions, the sharpening of palates, the understanding of terroir and the chemistry of food and wine harmony. She holds the WSET Level 4 Diploma of Wine and Spirits, the International Sommelier Guild's Sommelier Diploma and has spent several years in the Master of Wine program. DJ is the Wine Director of New District, an innovative online platform for wine, a critic with WineAlign, and Chief Judge of the Vancouver Magazine International Wine Competition. She moderates and speaks at wine festivals and for trade organizations, judges locally and internationally, and has started an Apprentice Judge training program in Canada to help mentor the next generation of wine judges in Canada.
Mark Shipway’s passion for all things vinous started in his teens, travelling to France on vacation, he acquired a love of French wine and gastronomy. Inspired by his experiences, he started working for a small boutique wine store specialising in the wines of Bordeaux, Burgundy & Champagne. After further travel in New Zealand, he returned to the UK's University of Brighton to study viticulture and enology as well as pursuing the WSET Diploma in Wines & Spirits (which he passed in 1999 with Distinction grade). Since graduating, Mark has explored a variety of roles in the wine industry including a stage as a buyer’s assistant at leading UK supermarket, Waitrose Ltd; several years in the sales and marketing department with top retailer Direct Wines; as a wine steward in South Africa at Stellenbosch's Delheims and Stellenzicht wine estates. In 2005, Mark moved to Vancouver, Canada where he has spent the last 13 years living and working as a wine educator. He currently teaches both the Wine Scholar Guild & WSET programs to Diploma level. In 2017 he passed the Court of Master Sommeliers’ Advanced Sommelier designation and is currently preparing to sit the Master Sommelier in 2019.
